I took a roasting on our X Factor chart for daring to criticise Danyl Johnson’s performance last night. Amid claims of Danyl-bashing (the nation’s favourite new sport!), I was told that I was ‘clearly biased’ against Danyl:
I appreciate that you’re obscenely biased against the guy for whatever reason, but you should honestly appreciate a fantastic performance when you see one. You have a voice on the Internet and people read this blog, so that’s great, just don’t make a fool out of yourself in doing so.
The guy is very talented and you really need to lay off him. You berated him with criticism last week, you bought into all these stories that have been said about him like a gullible moron, and you’re using this blog space to broadcast your unbelievable bias to the Internet, and it’s just verging on ridiculous.
Now, regular readers know that I only do the weekend live coverage of X Factor, and after I stopped sobbing uncontrollably from this attack on my integrity, I thought I should list my pros and cons of Danyl as part of this year’s X Factor. Hopefully you’ll see that I’m coming from a logical position, and more importantly not from an absurd, anti-Danyl viewpoint.
Pros
- Vocals. One of the better vocalists of the competition, Danyl has a great vocal range and can sing a wide variety of styles.
- Looks. He’s a hot guy, I think it’s safe to say. Despite being in the over 25’s category, I’d imagine Danyl is still young enough to appeal to teenagers upwards.
- Performance. Simon Cowell called Danyl’s audition the best first audition he’d ever seen. And quite rightly – when Danyl’s on form, his stage presence is confident and lively.
- Recording artist. Both an experienced former boybander and solo singer, Danyl ticks all the right boxes to make it big as a recording artist. Let’s be honest with each other, compared to the other contestants, Danyl is (probably) the only contestant capable of selling records when this competition ends.
Cons
- Attitude. I’m not going to say ‘cocky’. I think he’s worked in the music industry for long enough to know he’s good. My worry after Rock Week is that he takes criticism very badly. Can he handle mainstream exposure?
- Bullying scandal. There’ve been multiple news reports about Danyl’s treatment of other contestants – notably Kandy Rain and Stacey Solomon. I’m going to say there’s no smoke without fire, and personality issues seem to be the #1 complaint about Danyl, even from the judges.
- Press hate him. The media can’t stand Danyl. Even Heat magazine ran an article about how annoying he is. The thing is, if the press hate you, their opinions will tend to rub off on the people who read the papers.
I think it’s clear that the Pros outweigh the cons for Danyl. When he’s on top form, he’s amazing. But when he hits rock bottom(as in Rock Week), he can be truly awful.
On paper, Danyl Johnson should be the winner of X Factor this year. However, his lack of public support is worrying and should be a big concern for Simon Cowell. The public are the people who buy the records. If they’re not behind Danyl now will they buy his single when it comes out? I don’t think so. And Cowell is up against the British press to try and get some positive news about Danyl out there.
So, that’s my official tuppence worth on Danyl Johnson. I don’t love him, nor do I hate him. What are your pros and cons for Danyl? Leave me a comment!
